MailleTec Mesh Is Going To Mars!

MailleTec is proud to announce that our maille was sent to Mars as part of the Mars InSight program! Back in 2013 we worked with NASA JPL to develop a shield that would help protect delicate seismic equipment from heat and dust. The final piece used both our scale maille (using Ring Lord scales) and specially made titanium chainmaille.

Scale maille is inspired by the ancient Roman lorica plumata armour, which was worn by soliders who worshiped the god of war — Mars. The originally scheduled 2016 launch of the InSight lander was postponed due to an instrumentation failure, however it successfully launched on May 5th, 2018 and will land on the Elysium Planitia on Mars sometime on November 26th, 2018. InSight's mission is to gather information about the early evolutionary history of Mars by studying its core, mantle, crust, seismic activity etc. We are incredibly proud to have been a small part of this amazing project!

If you'd like some more information on InSight's mission there's a lot more available on NASA's InSight website, including details on the wind and thermal shield portion that we contributed to.

MailleTec Mesh Used in 'The Great Wall'

MailleTec is proud to announce that some of our mesh will be in 'The Great Wall' starring Matt Damon, Tian Jing, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau and Pedro Pascal. We worked on this project with The Ring Lord in early 2015 and we're excited to finally see it on the big screen. Our large mesh was used in various costuming pieces, including haubergeons and voiders - some of which were worn by Matt Damon's 'William' character.

MailleTec Scale Maille Used In 'Warcraft' Movie!

MailleTec is proud to announce that some of our work will make an appearance in the upcoming Warcraft movie. Based on the World of Warcraft video game series, the movie depicts conflicts between Orcs and Humans in the fabled world of Azeroth. We worked with The Ring Lord and Weta Workshop to create scale maille and regular chainmail for various characters. You can see our scale armor below on Anduin Lothar (played by Travis Fimmel) and King Llane (played by Dominic Cooper). We're thrilled to have been a part of this project and can’t wait to see it on the big screen!

MailleTec Mesh and Scale Maille Used in Seventh Son!

MailleTec is very excited to see some of our work on the big screen again! We’ve been waiting a long time for Seventh Son to be released and we can’t wait to go see it. We did a number of pieces for this project – Julianne Moore wears our scale maille (using The Ring Lord scales) in one of her main costumes and our blackened medium mesh is used on the knights’ costumes.

The scale maille pieces can be seen here on Mother Malkin's bodice and shoulder pieces:

Original plans called for a full-length scale maille dress with snake-skin detailing. We spent months creating this one of a kind piece using a customized dress form and cloth pattern to make sure the tailoring was as precise as it could be. There is almost no stretch in scale maille fabric so getting a proper fit is not easy. The arms and shoulders were especially challenging, however we think the results were stunning!

In the end however the dress wasn’t worn on screen. The skirt portion alone weighed around 30 lbs, and wearing it during prolonged shooting hours and during stunt work just wasn’t practical. We were told it might end up being used as a background prop, so keep your eyes open! Since 7th Son was filming in British Columbia, MailleTec’s Dane Duncan flew over to create a last minute custom piece on location. The result was the gorgeous black scale maille bodice piece seen on screen. The original dress was donated to the Fashion Institute of Technology museum in New York, however you can find more pictures of it in our Facebook album!

MailleTec Scale Maille Used In The Hobbit!

We were happy to see some of our scale material again in The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies! Our scale maille - made by MailleTec with scales from The Ring Lord – could be seen very briefly in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and we’re delighted to see them onscreen again. In 2011 WETA Workshop asked MailleTec and TRL to create custom pieces for the Mirkwood Elves. These pieces eventually became the ‘Leafmaille’ worn by elven soldiers in the large photo below. MailleTec’s Eric Matwe was flown to WETA headquarters in Wellington, NZ to help make sure everything was perfect before the pieces were filmed. He was even on set for a few days! MailleTec is thrilled to have been a part of such an amazing project!

You can see the scale maille in the photo on the panels below the belt.

And in the film here:

More MailleTec Mesh Used On HBO's Game Of Thrones

MailleTec’s medium mesh was used for Brienne’s new armor on Game of Thrones! In the recent episode ‘Oathbreaker’ Brienne was given a gorgeous new suit of armor which has our mesh used around the leather patches on the skirt and arms. We’ve been curious to see how our mesh would be used in her new costume and it’s great to finally see the stunning results!

Our mesh was also briefly visible on one of the jousters (second from right in the photo below) during The Purple Wedding. It was easily missed by blinking, but we were happy to have had even a small part in King Joffrey’s big day. We were thrilled with the result!

You can find out more about the costumes of Season 4 in this video. Gwendoline Christie – the actress who plays Brienne – talks about her new armor, and you can also see more of MailleTec’s mesh on the arms of Oberyn Martell’s armor!

MailleTec Mesh in Game of Thrones

HBO released this quicker teaser video of the Red Viper in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones - if your eyes are quick you'll see him wearing some of MailleTec's mesh! Needless to say, we're thrilled to have worked with the Game of Thrones costuming team and are pretty excited to see the upcoming season.

Oh, and check back here often, as this won't be the last update that we'll have to do for Game of Thrones Season 4.

MailleTec Scale Mail in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

MailleTec is incredibly proud to have had a small part in the costuming for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Way back in 2011, WETA Workshop contacted MailleTec and TRL about creating custom scale mail for the Mirkwood Elves. With TRL’s scales and MailleTec’s skill the designs underwent numerous revisions before becoming the ‘Leafmaille’ you’ll be able to see on screen.

MailleTec’s Eric Matwe was flown down to WETA headquarters in Wellington, NZ to help with the final touches. He even got to spend a few days on set – inspiring much jealously in the rest of the MailleTec team.

We’ve been keeping this top secret for some time now, and it’s great to finally be publicly excited about it! So keep a sharp eye out in theatres when the Mirkwood Elves are onscreen!

We'll post more photos and info as it becomes available, but in the meantime you can see our work in this behind the scenes feature just after the 5:30 mark (look for the scales the elves are wearing centre torso).

MailleTec Chainmail in 'Thor: The Dark World'

MailleTec's Medium Mesh was used in Marvel's Thor: The Dark World for Sif's new costume. Played by Jaimie Alexander, Sif is a great Asgarding warrior and Thor's longtime friend; she is expected to have a larger role in Thor: The Dark World. Our Medium Mesh chainmail was used to complement her plate armor in her new costume. Check it out in the official trailer:

You can learn more about Sif on the official page - as well as get some wallpaper and other cool downloads.

For those who want to know more, check out the IMDB page, the movie Wiki entry, or the character Wiki entry.

This is not the first time Saskatchewan chainmail has been used in a Thor film though! Our friends at Metal Designz made the chainmail underneath Volstagg's plate armor in the first movie.

MailleTec Fall Update

MailleTec has had a busy few months! We’ve sent stuff off to Transformers 4, Game of Thrones, and signed an NDA with Marvel. We’ve shipped out a ginormous curtain, redesigned some sharksuits for people (that ended up on Good Morning America!) and monkeys! We’re prepping for the upcoming release of Seventh Son – which has some of our chainmail in it as well as a gorgeous scale dress that we did for Julianne Moore.

While we’ve been lucky enough to work on a lot of really cool entertainment projects – the downside to that is our hands are somewhat tied in what we can talk about! We’ve getting really pumped about 7th Son though, which features Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges. Check out the trailer, where you can see MailleTec’s work on the first costume Julianne Moore is shown in, as well as blackened mesh on the horsed knights.

More of our work should be on show in the film – the release date is January 17th 2014.  We'll post more trailers as they become available.

In the meantime, check out the official website, IMBD page, or wikipedia entry

We’ve also got some top secret news– stay tuned for further updates!
